The word ‘arthritis’ in quite often used when talking about a group of conditions where arthritis plays a principle role, instead of to one single specific medical condition. Amongst this group there are two conditions which are particularly prominent and these are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and causes the destruction of the cartilage within the joints laying bear the ends of adjoining bones and permitting them to rub against each other with extremely painful consequences. This pain, as well as an accompanying stiffness, a lack of movement and sometimes inflammation can have a marked effect upon your quality of life. This condition is generally found in the ankles, spine knees, and hips although it can also often be found in the fingers. While there might be some basis of heredity in osteoarthritis, it is most frequently the result of some type of impact or a metabolic disorder. Today, rising obesity also plays a growing part in the diagnosis of osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is the second commonest form of arthritis and appears when the immune system starts to attack the body. The condition begins with inflammation and swelling in the lining of the joints and then continues into the cartilage and bone. It is normal for the condition to appear in the same joint on both sides of the body (for example, both wrists) when it is said to be ‘symmetrical’.
Before moving on take a minute to examine one or two of the many different kinds of arthritis before looking more closely at what causes arthritis.
Some of the other complaints where arthritis is the major factor are:
Juvenile Arthritis. When arthritis is found in a child before 16 it is usually referred to by the catchall phrase of ‘juvenile arthritis’. There are a lot of kinds of juvenile arthritis but the most commonly diagnosed is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) which causes pain or swelling in the shoulders, elbows, knees, toes and ankles. It is also usually seen with chills, a reappearing fever and on occasions a rash. The origin of juvenile arthritis is something of a mystery.
Psoriatic Arthropathy. This kind of arthritis appears in individuals who are also suffering from psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin condition which causes scaly, red patches on the neck, knees and elbows. This kind of arthritis commonly appears in the joints of the hands and feet and causes the toes and fingers to swell so that they resemble small sausages.
Arthritis can also accompany other conditions where it is not the key illness but is a major player in your condition. These conditions include:
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Generally called simply Lupus this is yet another disease in which the immune system attacks your body causing swelling, stiffness, joint pain and exhaustion. Lupus is most commonly found in women of child bearing age, but it does also show up in men and can also happen at any age.
Among a variety of conditions in which arthritis has a minor role are:
Sjögren’s Syndrome. Sjögren’s syndrome is mainly seen as a condition that attacks the mouth and eyes although it is in fact a disease of the immune system that also produces inflammation throughout the body, including the nerves, thyroid, brain, lungs, liver, kidneys and the joints.
