What Is Good For Arthritis?
For information about arthritis and what is good for arthritis? in particular please continue reading this brief post.
While people often talk about ‘true’ arthritis there is actually no such thing and when we use this term we are referring to various conditions in which arthritis is the primary disease present and plays a major role in your condition. The best known conditions within this group are both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is the most commonly diagnosed form of arthritis and is responsible for the break up of the cartilage in the joints uncovering the ends of adjoining bones and permitting them to rub against one another with very painful results. This pain, together with stiffness, a reduction in movement and usually swelling can severely reduce your quality of life. Osteoarthritis is most commonly seen in the hips, knees, ankles and spine but it can also frequently be seen in the fingers. While there might be some hereditary basis for osteoarthritis, it is most commonly the result of some kind of blow or a metabolic disorder. Today, obesity is also playing a growing part in the onset of osteoarthritis.
The second most commonly diagnosed type of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis which is a disease of the body’s immune system. The condition commonly appears in pairs of joints, like the elbows and wrists, when it is said to be symmetrical. First witnessed as an inflammation of the lining of the joints it moves on to attack first the cartilage and then the bones of the joint.
While looking at what is good for arthritis? it is worth taking a minute to look at a few of the many kinds of arthritis.
Among those conditions which are considered to be primarily arthritis are:
Juvenile Arthritis. Whenever arthritis is diagnosed in a child under 16 years of age it is often referred to by the catchall phrase of ‘juvenile arthritis’. There are many kinds of childhood arthritis but the most common is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) which produces swelling or pain in the knees, ankles, toes, elbows and shoulders. It is often accompanied by chills, a reappearing fever and from time to time a rash. The origin of juvenile arthritis is something of a mystery.
Pseudogout. Whereas gout results from an accumulation of uric acid, and the formation of crystals in the joint, pseudogout is caused by a build-up of calcium crystals which lead to swelling and pain and, sometimes, the loss of the all important cushioning cartilage.
Arthritis can also be present with other conditions where it is not the central problem but is a major player in your condition. Such conditions include:
Reactive Arthritis. Like its name suggests, this sort of arthritis is a reaction to either an intestinal infection or a sexually transmitted disease. It is quite common for reactive arthritis to appear together with conjunctivitis and urethritis.
There are also several medical conditions in which arthritis has a small role:
Paget’s Disease. In Paget’s disease the usual process of degeneration and re-building of the bones is accelerated leading to bigger, softer and weaker bones than is normal. This in turn can lead to arthritis in the joints typically of the skull, knees, hips, spine and ankles.
Finally, before shifting our focus towards what is good for arthritis? we should also have a look at a couple of tips to help in living with arthritis.
Conserve your energy by interposing periods of activity with periods of rest.
Be sure to get a sound night’s sleep by going to bed at the same time each day (including weekends).
Try adapting your home to make your life simpler by getting a telephone with large keys to make dialing simpler.
Make cleaning simpler by cutting down a broom handle or using a child’s brush if you find it easier to sweep while sitting down.
