Pseudogout. Pseudogout is very similar to gout except that the crystals in the joints are formed from calcium and not from uric acid. The result is quite often swelling and pain and, occasionally, the breakdown of cartilage within the joints. The crystal formation in pseudogout has nothing to do with the ingestion of dietary calcium.
There are also various conditions where arthritis is not the central element but is nonetheless a contributory factor. These include:
Scleroderma. This is a type of auto-immune disease normally found in adults, as opposed to children. The over-production of collagen causes the inflammation of the small blood vessels of the body and the stiffening of tissues in the blood vessels, internal organs, skin and joints. Joint stiffening in this case is caused by hardening of the overlying skin.
