The word ‘arthritis’ in commonly used when talking about a number of conditions in which arthritis plays a major part, rather than to one single specific condition. Amongst this group two conditions are particularly prominent and these are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
The commonest type of arthritis these days is osteoarthritis which is painful condition experienced as stiffness together with a loss of movement in the joints which a significant number of individuals find markedly lowers their quality of life. Generally seen in the knees, hips, ankles and spine, osteoarthritis results from the destruction of the cartilage which protects the bones so that the bones lose their protection and can rub against one another. This condition is usually caused by some form of injury or a metabolic condition.
The second most commonly diagnosed type of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis which is a disease caused by a deficiency of the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis normally appears in pairs of joints, such as the elbows and wrists, when it is described as being symmetrical. First experienced as an inflammation of the lining of the joints concerned it goes on to attack the cartilage and then the bones of the joint.
Before going any further take a minute to think about some of the many forms of arthritis before we look more deeply at is arthritis curable?.
There are various conditions that are considered to be ‘true’ arthritis including:
Psoriatic Arthropathy. Many people who have psoriasis also have psoriatic arthropathy. Commonly seen in the toes and fingers the condition is often very noticeable since it results in a swelling of the toes and fingers so that they appear like small sausages.
Relter’s Syndrome. Relter’s syndrome is most frequently diagnosed in young men where it effects the ankles and knees and is frequently accompanied by urogenital tract inflammation and conjunctivitis. This condition is usually caused by a reaction to Chlamydia or a case of salmonella food poisoning.
There are also various conditions in which arthritis is not the main element but is nevertheless a major contributory factor. These include:
Reactive Arthritis. Like its name suggests, this sort of arthritis appears as a reaction to either an intestinal infection or a STD. It is not unusual for reactive arthritis to appear alongside conjunctivitis and urethritis.
There are also various ailments in which arthritis fills a small part:
Raynaud’s Disease. In its main form Raynaud’s disease attacks the small blood vessels of the toes and fingers causing burning, discoloration, tingling, pain and at times numbness. The condition is brought on by exposure to the cold or by stress. A less common, but more serious, form of the condition called Raynaud’s phenomenon often appears with scleroderma or lupus.
