The word ‘arthritis’ in frequently used when talking about a number of conditions where arthritis plays a significant part, instead of to a single specific condition. In this group there are two conditions which are especially well known and these are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
The most commonly seen type of arthritis at the moment is osteoarthritis which is a very painful condition experienced as stiffness and a loss of movement in the joints that many individuals find severely reduces their quality of life. Usually seen in the knees, hips, ankles and spine, osteoarthritis is the consequence of the destruction of the cartilage which protects the bones so that they are no longer protected and are free to rub against one another. This condition is often caused by some kind of injury or a metabolic condition.
Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most frequently seen kind of arthritis and is evidenced when the immune system starts to attack the body. The condition begins with inflammation and swelling in the lining of the joints and then continues into the cartilage and the bone. It is quite common for rheumatoid arthritis to be found in the same joint on both sides of the body (for example, both elbows) in which case it is called ‘symmetrical’.
While thinking about what does rheumatoid arthritis feel like? it is also worth taking a minute or two to consider some of the many forms of arthritis.
A few of the other ailments in which arthritis is the central element are:
Ankylosing Spondylitis. This is a chronic condition, generally called bamboo spine because of the way in which the vertebrae grow together to create a rigid spine. No cause has been found for this condition but it is believed to have an inherited factor in the equation somewhere.
Juvenile Arthritis. There are many different kinds of arthritis that can be seen during childhood and, if such a condition is found in children under 16 years of age, it is generally simply called
Juvenile Arthritis. One particularly common kind of childhood arthritis is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) which is normally accompanied by chills, a fever that comes and goes and by pain generally in the shoulders, knees, elbows, ankles and toes.
There are also various conditions in which arthritis is not the key element but it is nevertheless a very significant contributory factor. These include:
Lyme Disease. This is caused by the transmission of bacteria after a bite from a tick. Lyme disease produces a fever, distinctive bull’s eye shaped red skin lesions, several problems with both the nerves and the heart and of course arthritis.
There are also various ailments in which arthritis fills a minor role:
Bursitis and Tendonitis. Bursitis is a swelling of the fibrous sac which cushions the tendons and results from an injury to one of the joints or by overuse of the joint. Tendonitis on the other hand is an irritation of the tendons which connect the muscles to the bones and is once again caused by an injury or overusing the joint.
