What Is Psoriatic Arthritis?

If you are trying to find comprehensive information on what is psoriatic arthritis? then you are looking in the ideal place.

Despite the fact that people occasionally refer to ‘true’ arthritis there is really no such thing and when we use this term we are referring to a group of conditions in which arthritis is the primary disease present and plays a major role in your condition. The best known conditions under this group are both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most frequently seen form of arthritis and is characterized by the destruction of the cartilage within the joints uncovering the ends of the bones so that they rub against one another with painful consequences. This pain, together with stiffness, a lack of movement and normally swelling can ruin the quality of your life. Osteoarthritis is generally found in the hips, knees, spine and ankles although it can also often be seen in the hands. Although there might be some basis of heredity in osteoarthritis, it is usually the result of some type of trauma or a metabolic disease. These days, obesity in much of the western world also plays a significant part in the onset of osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is the second commonest kind of arthritis and is evidenced when the immune system begins to attack the body. Rheumatoid arthritis begins with inflammation within the lining of the joints and then spreads into the cartilage and the bone. It is normal for rheumatoid arthritis to appear in the same joint on both sides of the body (for example, both ankles) in which case it is said to be ‘symmetrical’.

While considering what is psoriatic arthritis? it is worth taking a minute or two to examine some of the many different forms of arthritis.

Among the ailments which are considered to be principally arthritis are:

Gout. Normally named the ‘disease of kings’ this condition results from a build-up of uric acid. This leads to sharp crystals in the joints which cause both inflammation and considerable pain. Gout most commonly appears in the wrists, knees and the ‘bunion’ joint on the big toe. Whilst family history can play a part in gout, the food you eat and a number of drugs can also bring on the condition.

Pseudogout. Whereas gout results from an accumulation of uric acid, and then the formation of uric acid crystals in the joint, pseudogout results from a build-up of calcium crystals which lead to swelling and pain and, sometimes, the destruction of the important cushioning cartilage.

There are also a lot of conditions where arthritis is not the central element but is nevertheless a very significant contributory factor. These include:

Scleroderma. Scleroderma is a stiffening of the joints caused by hardening of the overlying skin. Seen largely in adults, as opposed to children, this auto-immune condition results in an excessive production of collagen and a stiffening of skin tissue.

Arthritis has a minor role in some medical conditions including:

Raynaud’s Disease. Stress or exposure to cold weather can cause Raynaud’s disease which produces tingling, pain, burning and discoloration in the fingers and toes. in addition, there is a second and somewhat more serious form of Raynaud’s disease, referred to as Raynaud’s phenomenon, that is frequently seen together with scleroderma or lupus.

Finally, before turning to what is psoriatic arthritis? we ought also to take a look at several suggestions to assist in dealing with arthritis.

Try to save your energy by doing important jobs first before your energy runs out.

Take steps to get a sound night’s sleep by not drinking tea and coffee during the evening.

Adapt your home to make your life simpler by wrapping rubber bands around any doorknobs that are difficult to turn, thereby improving their grip.

Make cleaning far simpler by using old socks onto which you have sprayed a little furniture polish on your hands rather than attempting to use a duster.
