What Does Arthritis Feel Like?
If you are looking for comprehensive information on what does arthritis feel like? then you have come to the very best place.
Although people occasionally refer to ‘true’ arthritis there is actually no such thing and they are referring to a number of conditions in which arthritis is the main disease present.
Osteoarthritis is the most commonly diagnosed kind of arthritis and leads to the destruction of the cartilage in the joints exposing the ends of the bones so that they can rub against one another with very painful consequences. This pain, combined with an accompanying stiffness, a lack of movement and sometimes swelling can ruin the quality of your life. This condition is most commonly seen in the knees, hips, ankles and spine but it can also often be found in the hands. Although there may be some hereditary basis for osteoarthritis, it is more commonly the result of some kind of trauma or a metabolic disease. Nowadays, obesity in much of the western world also plays an increasing part in the onset of osteoarthritis.
The second most common type of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis which is a condition caused by a deficiency of the immune system. The condition often appears in pairs of joints, like the ankles, when it is referred to as being symmetrical. Initially appearing as a swelling in the lining of the joints it goes on to attack the cartilage and then the bones of the joint.
Before proceeding take a moment to examine a few of the many different kinds of arthritis before looking more deeply at what does arthritis feel like?.
A few of the other conditions in which arthritis is the key factor are:
Infectious Arthritis. A range of bacteria, fungi and viruses can invade the joints of the body and create inflammation, fever and the loss of joint function.
Juvenile Arthritis. When arthritis is diagnosed in a child below the age of 16 it is frequently called ‘juvenile arthritis’. There are numerous kinds of arthritis in children but the most common is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) which is characterized by pain or swelling in the shoulders, knees, elbows, ankles and toes. It is also frequently found with chills, a fever which comes and goes and from time to time a rash. The origin of juvenile arthritis is not known.
Arthritis also appears alongside other conditions where it is not the central illness but is a major player in your condition. These conditions include:
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Lupus, as it is commonly called, is evidenced mainly in women during their child bearing years but it can also be found in men and children. It is a disease of the auto-immune system that results in joint stiffness and pain.
Arthritis plays a minor role in some ailments including:
Paget’s Disease. In a case of Paget’s disease the normal process of degeneration and re-building of the bones is accelerated creating bigger, softer and weaker bones than is normal. This in turn can produce arthritis in the joints typically of the skull, hips, spine, ankles and knees.
