Initially experienced as an inflammation of the lining of the joints concerned it moves on to attack the cartilage and then the bones of the joint.

Pseudogout. Pseudogout similar to gout except that the crystals found in the joints are formed from calcium and not from uric acid. It is worth noting that the crystal formation in pseudogout is not related to the intake of dietary calcium.
Gout. A perhaps ‘historical’ condition often thought of as being common within the royal families of Europe, gout is an especially painful condition that attacks the knees, wrists and classically the ‘bunion’ joint of the big toe. Gout is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints often resulting from the use of a variety drugs and by eating a particular style of diet. Family history is also considered to play a part in causing gout.
There are also a lot of conditions where arthritis is not the main element but it is nevertheless a very significant contributory factor. These include:
Scleroderma. Scleroderma is a stiffening of the joints which results from hardening of the overlying skin. Seen principally in adults, rather than in children, this auto-immune disease causes an over-production of collagen and a stiffening of the skin tissue.

Sjögren’s Syndrome. Sjögren’s syndrome is mainly seen as a condition affecting the eyes and mouth but it is a disease of the immune system that also produces inflammation throughout the body, including the nerves, brain, thyroid, lungs, liver, kidneys and the joints.
