What Is Degenerative Arthritis?
For the latest information on arthritis and what is degenerative arthritis? please take a look at this brief post.
The term ‘arthritis’ in normally used to refer to several conditions where arthritis plays a leading role, instead of to one specific medical condition. Within this group two conditions are especially well known and these are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is the most common kind of arthritis and produces the break up of the cartilage within the joints exposing the ends of the bones and permitting them to rub together with extremely painful results. This pain, together with stiffness, a reduction in movement and usually inflammation can have a marked impact on the quality of your life. This form of arthritis is frequently seen in the hips, knees, spine and ankles but it can also frequently be seen in the fingers. While there may be some basis of heredity in osteoarthritis, it is generally the result of some type of injury or a metabolic disorder. Nowadays, obesity in much of the western world also plays an increasing part in the diagnosis of osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most frequently seen type of arthritis and appears when the immune system starts to attack the body. Rheumatoid arthritis starts with inflammation and swelling within the lining of the joints and then moves on into the cartilage and the bone. It is normal for the condition to appear in the same joint on either side of the body (for instance, both knees) when it is called ‘symmetrical’.
Before we look in detail at what is degenerative arthritis? we need to take a second to think about one or two of the many different forms of arthritis.
Some of the other ailments where arthritis is the major player are:
Relter’s Syndrome. This is usually caused by reaction to Chlamydia, but it can also follow a case of salmonella food poisoning. The condition is commonly seen in young men who experience urogenital tract swelling, conjunctivitis and stiffness of the knee and ankle joints.
Psoriatic Arthropathy. This form of arthritis appears in people who are also afflicted by psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin condition which causes scaly, red, rough patches on the elbows, knees and neck. This form of arthritis frequently settles in the joints of the hands and feet and can cause the toes and fingers to swell up so that they resemble small sausages.
There are also a number of conditions in which arthritis is not the main element but it is nonetheless a major contributory factor. These include:
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Generally referred to as simply Lupus this is yet another disease in which the body’s immune system turns to attack the body causing swelling, joint pain, stiffness and exhaustion. Lupus is usually seen in women of child bearing age, although it can also be seen in men and can appear at any age.
There are also a number of medical conditions where arthritis has a minor part:
Polymyalgia Rheumatica. PMR, as it is usually known, causes pain and stiffness in the hips, neck, lower back and shoulders which can come on literally overnight and cause problems with such things as getting in and out of bed. while the pain is similar to that experienced with rheumatoid arthritis, in PMR there is no sign of active arthritis.
Lastly, we ought to acquaint ourselves with a few of the ideas which can help in dealing with arthritis before going forward to look in more detail at what is degenerative arthritis?.
