What Is Septic Arthritis?
If you are trying to find detailed information about what is septic arthritis? then you are in the ideal place.
The term ‘arthritis’ in usually used to refer to a variety of conditions where arthritis plays a leading role, instead of to one single specific medical condition. Within this group there are two conditions which are particularly well known and these are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
The commonest type of arthritis these days is osteoarthritis which is painful condition involving stiffness together with a reduction in movement in the joints that a lot of individuals find severely lowers their quality of life. Generally found in the hips, knees, ankles and spine, osteoarthritis is the consequence of the break down of the cartilage which protects the bones so that the bones lose their cushioning and can rub painfully against one another. This condition is generally caused by some form of trauma or a metabolic condition.
Rheumatoid arthritis is the second commonest kind of arthritis and is evidenced when the immune system starts to attack the body. The condition starts with inflammation and swelling in the lining of the joints and then moves on into the cartilage and bone. It is quite common for rheumatoid arthritis to appear in the same joint on both sides of the body (for instance, both wrists) in which case it is referred to as being ‘symmetrical’.
Before moving on take a second to examine one or two of the many forms of arthritis before looking more closely at what is septic arthritis?.
There are lots of conditions that are considered to be ‘true’ arthritis and these include:
Pseudogout. Where gout results from an accumulation of uric acid, and then the formation of uric acid crystals in the joint, pseudogout results from an accumulation of calcium crystals which can cause swelling and pain and, on occasions, the loss of the important cushioning cartilage.
Psoriatic Arthropathy. A lot of people who suffer from psoriasis also suffer from psoriatic arthropathy. Usually seen in the toes and fingers psoriatic arthropathy is often very noticeable because it results in a swelling of the toes and fingers so that they resemble small sausages.
There are also various conditions in which arthritis is not the key element but it is nonetheless a contributory factor. These include:
Scleroderma. Scleroderma is a stiffening of the joints caused by hardening of the overlying skin. Seen largely in adults, as opposed to children, this condition results in an over-production of collagen and a stiffening of the skin tissue.
There are also quite a few medical conditions in which arthritis plays a small role:
Paget’s Disease. Paget’s disease is a type of arthritis that appears commonly in the skull, ankles, hips, knees and spine. The condition results from a breakdown in the normal bone growth in turn causing abnormally big, soft and weak bones.
