The word ‘arthritis’ in commonly used to refer to various conditions where arthritis plays a central part, instead of to one specific medical condition. Within this group two conditions are especially prominent and these are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
The most frequently observed type of arthritis at the moment is osteoarthritis which is painful condition involving stiffness and a loss of movement in the joints which many people find markedly lowers their quality of life. Normally found in the spine, ankles, knees and hips, osteoarthritis results from the destruction of the cartilage that protects the bones so that they lose their protection and are able to rub against one another. Osteoarthritis is commonly caused by some type of shock or a metabolic condition.
The second most frequently seen kind of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis which is a condition caused by a deficiency of the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis quite often appears in pairs of joints, like the wrists, when it is referred to as being symmetrical. First experienced as an inflammation of the lining of the joints it goes on to attack the cartilage and then the bones.
Let us take a second to consider some of the many types of arthritis before we look more deeply at what does arthritis pain feel like?.
There are a variety of conditions which are classed as ‘true’ arthritis including:
Ankylosing Spondylitis. This is a chronic inflammation of the spine that can result in the vertebrae being fused together such that the spine becomes rigid. When seen on an x-ray the spine is often said to look like bamboo and not surprisingly is sometimes called a bamboo spine. We have no idea what causes this kind of arthritis although it is thought that heredity plays a role.
Gout. An ‘historical’ condition normally thought of as being prevalent within the royal families of Europe, gout is a particularly painful condition that affects the knees, wrists and classically the ‘bunion’ joint in the big toe. Gout is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints often arising out of the use of several drugs and by following a particular style of diet. Inheritance is also believed to play a part in causing gout.
There are also numerous conditions where arthritis is not the key element but is nevertheless a main contributory factor. These include:
Reactive Arthritis. Reactive arthritis is triggered by the onset of either a sexually transmitted disease or an infection of the intestinal tract. In this case arthritis is generally accompanied by conjunctivitis (which is an inflammation of the lining of the eyes) and urethritis (which is an inflamed urethra).
There are also several ailments in which arthritis plays a small part:
Raynaud’s Disease. In its principle form Raynaud’s disease affects the small blood vessels of the toes and fingers leading to pain, tingling, burning, discoloration and sometimes numbness. The condition can be brought on by exposure to the cold or by stress. A less common, but nevertheless more serious, form of the disease known as Raynaud’s phenomenon frequently appears alongside scleroderma or lupus.

Adapt your house to make life simpler by wrapping rubber bands around those doorknobs which are hard to turn, thus improving their grip.
Make house cleaning simpler by wearing old socks sprayed with some furniture polish on your hands rather than attempting to clutch a duster.
